Why should you store your motorcycle for the winter?

Winters can be rough on your vehicles! Since motorcycles are immobile during the cold season, it is important to store them in a way that protects them from bad weather. Storing your motorcycle for the winter will help you avoid damages to the body, the mechanical components and the tires.

Moreover, it could help you save money on your insurance premium and reduce costs related to your driving license and registration with the SAAQ.

When should you store your bike?

When should you store your motorcycle? If you want to have access to a partial reimbursement from the SAAQ, then you must store your bike before September 30th.

Should you choose to prolong the season beyond September 30th, then you can store your motorcycle later, of course. It is not recommended to keep driving your motorcycle when roads are becoming icy or covered in snow, and you will have to stop driving it at the latest on November 30th.

The procedures with the SAAQ

If you want your partial reimbursement, then you can complete your storage request online on or in person. You will need your registration certificate along with an official document with your picture. Someone with a power of attorney letter specific to the SAAQ model could also store it for you.

As for the partial reimbursement, you could receive it by check, debit card or even by adjusting the direct debits, according to your preferences.

Procedures with your motorcycle insurance

Generally, the insurance premium is calculated according to how long you use your motorcycle annually. We still recommend that you communicate with your insurance representative when you choose to store your motorcycle, as some policies could be reviewed and adjusted. For example, fire protection policies are not mandatory, but it can be a smart idea if you store your motorcycle in a garage.

How to properly store your motorcycle for winter

Cleaning your motorcycle before winter

Before storing your bike for the winter, it is important to clean it properly! When it is outside, it is exposed to dirt and salt. Should these remain on the body and mechanical components during storage, there is a good chance that they will cause damages to the paint, and even the engine.

Proceed to a thorough cleaning, followed by a good polish and anti-rust treatment if you wish. Do not forget to scrub off any dead insects!

Pay attention to corrosion

Corrosion is the biggest threat for your motorcycle during winter. It is very important to clean it off, but also to apply a layer of wax or anti-rust treatment on the body. Some of the external components should also be greased, which include the levers and chain.

Rely on the manufacturer’s recommendations or visit a dealership that specializes in motorcycle maintenance services. Take note that choosing the right cover is just as important: pick a model that is specifically made for motorcycle storage and that allows for air to circulate.

Battery

A battery that has been unused for too long could stop working properly, or even not work at all. If you want to avoid this, make sure that it remains charged for the whole duration of the winter season.

To do this, you could charge it regularly; better yet, we recommend using an intelligent charger that maintains battery charge. This will give you added peace of mind and help you avoid overcharge. You will also want to ensure that it is kept in a dry space at room temperature at all times.

Oil change

Used oil contains acids that can cause corrosion in your engine. To preserve all parts, it is important to empty the oil before you store your motorcycle. If you have recently changed the oil, you can skip this step, but you will have to change it after the winter is over and before you begin using your motorbike again.

Should your tank be empty or full before winter?

That depends! Electric injection motorcycles must have a full tank of fuel, while those with a carburetor will require a completely empty tank.

Before filling it up with fuel, you will want to pour a stabiliser into the tank: this will help you avoid humidity from accumulating, among other things. Then, you should start your motorcycle to help the liquids circulate, including the new oil.

If your motorcycle has a carburetor, empty the fuel tank and apply an anti-corrosion product inside your tank.

How to properly store your motorcycle during winter?

Choosing the proper place to store your motorcycle for winter is crucial. You should avoid leaving it outside at all costs, where it will be exposed to the cold and other severe weather conditions.

A proper place to store your bike would be a dry space that is not too cold, like a heated garage, for example. You don’t have a garage? No problem; there are spaces you can rent to store your motorcycle for the winter at a reasonable price.

You should also cover your motorcycle with a proper cover that does not reach the ground, and make sure to inflate your tires before storing your motorcycle for the winter.

FAQ About motorcycle storage

What type of cover should I use for my motorcycle?

The motorcycle cover should allow for air to flow, to prevent condensation and humidity from forming. Air tight covers and cotton covers should be avoided for that very reason: they will probably do more harm than good! It is worth investing in a proper motorcycle cover that is specifically made for storing your motorcycle in the winter.

What type of oil should I use before storing my bike?

Before choosing the oil, think of the temperatures you can expect during your first outings in the spring. An oil that is best adapted to cold temperatures is generally better, like a 5W30 oil, for example. This will be helpful the first few times you are starting your motorcycle in the spring!

How do I care for my motorcycle battery in the winter?

The best way to take care of your motorcycle battery is to leave it plugged to an intelligent charger, which will maintain battery charge and do the work for you! The battery should also be in a dry space at room temperature, never below zero degrees, and never directly on the ground.

How to prepare your motorcycle tires for the winter season?

Your tires should be cleaned before your motorcycle is stored for the winter. Inflate your tires slightly more than necessary, as this will help avoid distortion caused by the vehicle’s weight. Using tire supports when storing your motorcycle on your center kickstand will also help you avoid damages.

How can I protect my motorcycle from rodents in the winter?

Place traps close to your motorcycle or use repellents, which will have to be sprayed regularly in order to be efficient. If you are storing your motorcycle in the garage, you should avoid leaving any type of food, including food for your pets.
